Southwest Iowa Fishing Team
Develop amateur youth fishing for all Iowa girls and boys with education and conservation. The primary initiative is to instill ideals of sportsmanship, diversity, equity, and inclusion through special educational workshops, mentoring, community outreach, fishing clinics, and competitive tournaments. All student who loves to fish and in 3rd grade through seniors in high schools can join the team and create a lifetime of memoires and skills. SWIFT make it easy for student anglers to be apart, of the team with three different levels to match their skill and schedule. SWIFT offers Virtual On-line tournaments, Kayak and Boat tournaments for the student anglers. Students have the chance to earn and win trophies, tackle prizes, and scholarships at the local and on a national level. High School teams will have the opportuntiy to fish for National Championship and World Finals tournament and Junior teams have the opportunity qualify for the Junior World Championships with The Bass Federation (TBF), Student Angler Federation (SAF) and the Major League Fishing (MLF).
SWIFT also engages in proactive conservation projects witht the student anglers to improve and enhance water quality and fish habitat in Iowa area lakes and ponds. Providing habitats is essential to preserving biodiversity. All species of fish need a healthy living space or habitat, to survive grow and reproduce. One artificial structure provides a huge benefit by providing substrate, nesting, spawning habitat, food source, and shelter for young fish to grow.
- Combined from all the 22 tournaments the SWIFT anglers caught 2208 fish, 660 pounds and over 13,000 inches!
- Formed 2 years ago because of Covid. Started with 9 students & now the team has over 125 in 13 SWI counties. 4 of the senior anglers are now fishing in college.
- SWIFT student anglers partnered with the Iowa DNR to build and place over 350 fish habitat in Iowa lakes and pounds in Southwest Iowa.
