Macedonia Historical Preservation Society (MHPS) was organized in 2000 and officially incorporated in 2001 for the purpose of preserving, restoring, and maintaining the area historic buildings and Macedonia area history. Long-range goals include preserving area history and maintaining the museum for the area, preserving the history and heritage skills of the pioneers who traveled through Macedonia on the Pioneer Trail and those who settled in this vicinity. Macedonia Historical Preservation Society’s motto is “A Bridge From the Past to the Future.” The organization’s logo is fittingly the old wooden railroad bridge that was on Main Street and was used by the community to provide a safe passage over the C.B. & Q. Railroad tracks.
The group has collected area history and has available the first Macedonia History Book. The book is a record of much of the area history. Another project included restoring a Main Street building for the Pioneer Trail Museum. The group helped revive Donia Day, an annual celebration that began in the 1950’s. One of the most recent projects has been the facilitation of the transition of the Painted Camel Gallery into a non-profit artists' cooperative.
The Painted Camel Gallery is typically open Fridays 4 to 7 PM, Saturdays Noon to 5 PM, or by appointment. Artists are encouraged to help with the staffing of the gallery as they are able/interested and there are different membership levels to accommodate a variety of needs.
- The Macedonia Historical Preservation Society and Pioneer Trail Museum are run exclusively by volunteers and funded through fundraisers, donations and grants.
- The Macedonia Historical Preservation Society owns the Painted Camel Gallery Building, as it was purchased at the same time as the museum expansion.
- The decorated metal panels lining Macedonia's Main Street sidewalks represent historical memories and the project was sponsored by MHPS.
