The Farragut Admiral Trail Committee began as an interested assembly of advocates from the community in 2015, when the City of Farragut and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation were in the process of acquiring 4.2 miles of the former BNSF rail line from Farragut to Highway 2. The group was formally established as a committee under the Farragut City Council in the spring of 2017, after the corridor was officially purchased and work could begin. The committee's purpose is to meet and make decisions about the future of the Admiral Trail, which is named in honor of Admiral David Farragut. The committee reports and makes recommendations to the Farragut City Council. When complete the Admiral Trail will connect with the Wabash Nature Trail in Shenandoah and also be a part of the Frontier Iowa Trails.
