BRIGIT SAINT BRIGIT adds a unique dimension to Omaha's diverse live-theatre landscape by presenting rarely-performed classics and other finely-scripted plays, as well as original works, at site-specific venues. Professional-quality acting and directing delivers these stories with passion and power. In other words, good tales, well told.
Founded and operated by artists, BSB--now in its 31st consecutive year--is also committed to the dignity of those who bring the plays to life and the value of their time and talent, especially essential to the Theatre's mission, thus, the Company pays all actors, directors, designers, and technicians. Seventy percent of funding goes to people, not things. Here's how.
Brigit is a site-specific theatre, mounting each production at a location that will enhance the setting of a given play. (Examples of our venues include the Joslyn Castle, Benson Theatre, the gothic chapel at First Central Congregational Church, the Jewish Community Center, and Rainwood Farm.) This strategy not only highlights the material, but also enables the Theatre to avoid incurring year-round building expenses and the cost of filling a large space with elaborate scenery. This low-overhead approach has been the key to successfully staying the course--not having to turn to less intriguing material--since it allows us to direct most of our resources to the primary element: the artists.
BSB is the only mid-size theatre in the area that has been in continuous production for 31 years, maintaining the same artistic direction and mission, and offering 4-6 full-length productions each season. The onstage talent is drawn from a core repertory company working with other area actors and Equity guests.
What does a play say? Is it worth the saying? How well is it said? It's in the answers to these questions that Brigit Saint Brigit chooses its material among widely varied plays, from the Greeks and Shakespeare, to the darker world of Pinter, to the lyricism of the Irish and on through to outstanding contemporary works, established or original. Most of the titles Brigit Saint Brigit mounts cannot be seen at any other area venue.
As we prepare to open our annual HOLIDAY LIGHTS production on December 7th--a collection of original short plays in partnership with the Benson Theatre--we ask that you consider us in your charitable contributions and encourage you to include a night out with BSB--in December or on your spring calendar for Brian Friel's MOLLY SWEENEY or Henrik Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE.
